Alarming Obesity and Overweight Statistics
Before we go in to the secret for losing weight, lets take a look at the Obesity and Overweight Statistics. According to the CDC, More than one-third of adults (35.7%) are obese defined as a body mass index(BMI) of 30 or more. Another third of all Americans are in the overweight category defined as those with a body mass index between 25-30 taking the total number of Obese and Overweight Americans to about 68% percent of the population. Almost 17% of youth were also obese. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
What are the medical costs of Obesity?
Now that we understand the enormity of the problem, lets look at the cost of obesity to our bottom line. In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight. These are just medical costs, however. As some of you can imagine, there are other costs associated with obesity such as lost productivity, cost of excess food that overweight people consume, cost of lost opportunities as obese people tend to get lower paying jobs, especially women, and most importantly, cost of loss of years of life!
What is the total true cost of being obese in America?
According to the widely publicized study from George Washington University, The overall tangible annual costs of being obese are $4,879 for an obese woman and $2,646 for an obese man.
The overall annual costs of being overweight are $524 and $432 for women and men, respectively. For both genders, the incremental costs of obesity are much higher than the incremental costs of being overweight.
Adding the value of lost life to these annual costs produces even more dramatic results. Average annualized costs, including value of lost life, are $8,365 for obese women and $6,518 for obese men.

Now let's look at what are the factors contributing to our weight gain so we can use that knowledge to potentially reverse these causes. - First, insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome, that affects one in three Americans and leads to belly fat accumulation. Studies have shown that belly fat leads to increased inflammation in the body thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other conditions. In fact, waist circumference of over 40 inches in men and 36 inches in women(lower in Asian Populations), is one of the five criteria for metabolic syndrome.
- Second, lack of polyphenols and other antioxidants in the diet. Before the modern food processing era, our diet used to have more than 50 percent unprocessed and uncooked food items such as colored fruits, vegetables, and other natural ingredients that are high in antioxidants such as polyphenols. Studies have shown that lack of polyphenols leads to increased inflammation in the body.
- Third, the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids used to be 1:1 but is now at 1:16 which also increases inflammation. Learn more. Having high blood pressure or taking a blood pressure medication, having prediabetes with a fasting blood sugar of over 100 or a history of diabetes would count as one point.
